As a senior disciple of Grandmaster Wan Lai Shen in Liu He Zi Ran Men, Shifu Li shared his expertise in Chinese martial arts with students in Rotterdam from 2006 to 2018. His teachings live on through Jianlong Wushu, where his legacy continues.

ORIGINS OF WUSHU (武术).

Wushu, meaning “martial art” in Chinese, has its roots in ancient China, where it began as a method of self-defense and military training. Over time, wushu evolved into a comprehensive system that emphasizes not only physical techniques but also discipline, self-control, and respect.

In Western culture, “kung fu” is commonly used to refer to Chinese martial arts. However, “kung fu” (功夫) broadly means “skill achieved through hard work” and can apply to various disciplines. The precise term for these martial arts is “wushu” (武术).

INSTRUCTOR JOHN TANG

John’s journey in wushu began at a young age under the guidance of esteemed masters. In 2018, he took over the wushu school from his shifu, continuing to build on a tradition of excellence. His teaching emphasizes discipline, respect, and perseverance, fostering a supportive environment for students of all levels.

With years of experience practicing and teaching wushu, John has developed a deep understanding of modern wushu forms and techniques. He proudly represents the Netherlands at European and World Championships and is actively involved in organizing the Ultimate Wushu Championships, contributing to the growth and promotion of the sport.

wushu styles and lion dance

Northern and Southern Wushu are two distinct styles with unique characteristics. Northern Wushu is known for its high, powerful kicks and dynamic movements, emphasizing agility and speed. In contrast, Southern Wushu focuses on strong, rooted stances and practical, close-range combat techniques, emphasizing stability and power.

Both styles provide excellent foundational skills for Lion Dancing, enhancing the precision and strength needed for the performance.
